Chromebooks 1:1 Program

As part of Clarendon CISD's ongoing efforts to provide all the tools necessary to prepare our students for excelling in the 21st century, a 1-to-1 Chromebook program is in place. Students in grades 3-12 are issued a Chromebook computer and students in grades Head Start through second grade have access to Chromebooks via mobile laptop carts.

Teacher training is a major component of Technology and training opportunities are continually available within the district and outside the district.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will there be costs involved in obtaining a laptop for take-home use?
With such a large investment, the school is doing everything it can to ensure that the computers remain in good working order for as long as possible. A warranty was purchased along with the new laptops which will cover defects in materials or workmanship that are not a result of misuse or abuse.  This type of repair will be done at no cost to the district.

When each laptop is issued, a non-refundable $20 maintenance fee will be collected from the student to help pay for repairs not covered by the warranty.  This fee will be due annually.

For repairs that are required due to accidents, etc, there will be a parts fee.  If the computer is under warranty and the problem is mechanical, it will be sent off to be repaired by the company.  If the damage is caused by the student, ie misuse or abuse, the computer will be repaired in house and the student will be charged for parts. Take-home privileges may be suspended until all costs are paid and a decision is made about the student's further use of the equipment.

Will I have the same laptop year after year?
The answer is yes is most circumstances, but no guarantees are made.

What if I already have another type of laptop, can I bring it to school?
You will be required to use the school-issued laptop.  This is necessary to ensure that you have a computer that gives you network capability with our school's network and that it is filtered through our school's filtering program.

Can I use the laptop during the summer?
All laptops will be collected at the end of the school year for general maintenance, cleaning, and software installation purposes.  Students will receive their laptops again at the beginning of the next school year.

What about insurance against theft or breakage through carelessness?
Your laptop computer will be portable and very valuable, making it an attractive target for thieves.  Therefore, the above-mentioned $20 maintenance fee is mandatory.  The best insurance is to take care of your laptop. Do not leave your laptop in the building, classroom, car, or anywhere else unattended.

Can I load software on the laptop myself?
All software has to be approved by the CISD Technology staff and must be installed by them.  We must keep accurate records of software licensing and must insure that all programs are compatible with the laptops.

Are the files on my laptop private?
Understand that the laptop you will be issued is still school property.  You are being loaned the computer for educational use.  We understand that students will also use the laptops for personal things.  However, keep in mind that the laptop is subject to school inspection at any time, and violations of school policy regarding objectionable data, pictures, etc will be dealt with as discipline issues and may lead to a loss of take-home privileges.

Also, while at school and connected to the school's network, certain school personnel will have the ability to view the desktop of all laptops, to freeze that screen if necessary for proof of infractions, or take over function of that computer remotely.  This is done to ensure that students are indeed using the laptops at school for educational use and are following instructions of teachers.
